GETTING STARTED

machine_edited.jpg
  • Call 1-800-940-3447 or visit clickbeforeyoudigmb.com to get you utilities cleared for digging.

  • After your lines are located you have a 2 week window to begin your project.

  • Call The Post Man Ltd. and book an appointment as early as possible in your 2 week window – 204-782-4232

  • Do a layout to mark the centres of your new posts on the ground.  It’s easy!

  • Stretch a string nice and tight along your property line a couple inches above the ground. This is simply to make a straight line.

  • Push a stick in the ground beside the string every 6 feet centre to centre

  • The sticks represent the centre of the new wood fence post

  • 8 feet centre to centre is a minimum requirement but we recommend 6 feet to reduce sagging between the sections

  • WHEN YOU ARE DONE TAKE YOUR STRING DOWN and you will notice that your sticks are in a straight line.

  • Count your sticks to ensure that you purchase the correct amount of wood fence posts.

FENCE BUILDING TIPS

  • If you are removing your old fence, take it apart in sections.  If you do it board by board, you may end up with a yard full of nails.  Once the old posts are standing on their own, wrap a chain around them twice and use a bumper jack to pull them out of the ground.  If you find they are breaking off at ground level, don’t worry too much about this.  Instead, do your layout in a manner that misses all of the stumps in the ground that will eventually turn into soil anyway.  Digging out all of the old stumps will just leave your yard looking like a bunch of gophers had a party!  LOL!  Concentrate on getting your corners out if you would like to reuse those spots to maintain your fence line.  If the corners break off we can remove those stumps for $20 each provided they are not set in concrete.

  • If sharing a property line always talk to your neighbour before you build the fence.  Nobody likes surprises.  If you are sharing the cost with the neighbour, build the fence right down the centre of the property line.  If you are paying for the project yourself or share a property line with the city, make sure the entire fence is on your property.

  • The distance between the fence posts does not have to be exact for most projects. Every custom fence is built by cutting and fitting the stringers to the existing posts. Sometimes drilling in a yard is like playing underground pinball.  If we try drilling in a location and the ground does not accept a hole for whatever reason, a common practice is to move the post over one way or the other while maintaining the fence line.  When framing up the fence simply cut your stringer to fit.

  • In the backyard, the maximum allowable height of your fence is 6’6” and in the front yard it is 4’. Most people build the fence 6’2” out of the ground so that your pre-cut 6’ fence boards aren’t touching  the ground as you build.
